The theme of the night wasn’t just a rock show. It was gratitude, love and joy. If you were looking for an intimate way to see Corey Taylor, his House of Blues show was certainly one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time. I’m not even sure where he gets this kind of dedication to his art, but I’m glad he has it.
He held the crowd in the palm of his hand for the entire show. He’s just incredible. Having seen him just two weeks ago bring the house down with Slipknot, I am amazed at how he manages to connect with fans on both levels. From the moment he walked out on the stage, he commanded the attention of the crowd. At one point even playing a little version of Corey says, as I’m calling it. If he said sing, they sang, if he said move a certain way, or make a certain gesture, they did it to his utter delight. The energy at this venue has never been better. I smiled the for every moment of this show. It was a source of enjoyment for everyone.
Corey Taylor stopped and thanked the crowd for being there and supporting him so many times, I lost count. He seemed extra grateful on this night in particular. His sincerity was palpable. He played much of the new music from CMF2 available here: https://store.coreytaylor.com/collections/media
There is no doubt with over three million followers on just a single social media platform, people love him. I always try to take a moment to walk whichever venue I am photographing, to get a feel for the crowd and eves drop on a few conversations for various quotes in the article. What was particularly note worthy is I had to wait for breaks in between songs to overhear anything. People just didn’t stop to talk to anyone during his performance. They were mesmerized.
At one point in between songs, Corey had to pause to tell everyone to “listen to security” and “I don’t tolerate bullshit at my shows” when a few fans up front began pushing each other around. There was the occasional crowd surfer, with one guy being dropped. He bounced right back up as if nothing had happened. A few others made it to the front and were trotted over to the side after a fist bump from the man himself. He also cautioned any young fans who might be attending to “not use some of the words Uncle Corey uses as the might get them suspended or in some cases put in jail”. He’s just a funny, personable guy.
Of course he wasn’t getting out of the building without playing the theme to “Sponge Bob Square Pants”, which I love. He is always ready to give fans what they want. So, of course he played ” Through Glass”. The biggest surprise came during the three song encore. He performed a great cover of “Dark Side” by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. There were quite a few people in the audience who have probably never heard the song, much less know it was part of a sound track for “Eddie and the Cruisers”, a dramatization of band life, dramatic relationships between members, and a mystery about the odd disappearance the lead singer. I was delighted see that.
