Jen chats to Ivan in the lead up to this tour.
Hi Ivan, How are you going?
Excellent! I am super stoked that you are on the Totally 80’s tour. This tour has many 40 to 50 year olds really keen for July to come around.
Are you as keen as we are?
Yes! This is my first time to Australia so I am really looking forward to it!
What are the main things that you are looking forward to?
EVERYTHING! Being from Canada, I have heard that Australia is like the warm Canada, so I am keen for this trip.
Your younger self that was dancing in the Safety dance video, did you dream that all these years later you would be touring and playing to sold out audiences?
You know it is funny when you start in this business you think everything that you do is going to be a number one hit. You think you are going to be famous…Blah blah blah.. But to be doing this some 30 years later, it is quite amazing, I can’t believe the smile on people’s faces, when the fans remember the song and they have a blast. They also bring their kids along. It is awesome.
Yes, I’ll be bringing my teenagers along, they love the Safety Dance.
Safety Dance was not the first song that you released wasn’t your second or your third?
Yes it was our second or third, we put out ‘Antarctica’,we put out ‘I Got The Message’ and then we out out Safety Dance and that took off the Dance remix in the clubs.
Do you have any hints of the line up are you bringing out for this tour?
OK! You have a show coming up in August in LA, I saw you announce it on a facebook video…. My jaw dropped with that lineup! Are you looking forward to that?
Yes, these are the guys that we tour with all the time. the only band that I have toured with the totally 80s is Berlin. We have played with Human League. It is great, there are a lot of these 80’s concerts in the States. We are going to be doing a couple more after that, a couple in Phoenix, and Tucson Arizona and a few more after that.
Your facebook is the funniest band facebook I have ever looked at. Classic photo I saw on facebook that your lyrics from Safety Dance were used in a rest room at Burger Bench, that made me laugh then I looked further and there are heaps of photos that have used your lyrics as a bit of fun, My fav would be the one on the care label of the shorts, is there one had you that you think is the most hilarious?
Well I put one the other day by myself which was a Donald Trump one and we had to take it down as it was the most controversial post that I’ve ever put up. It was crazy, there were two pictures, one picture was Donald Trump and said “You can dance if you want to except if your Mexican! “ (both laughing) then the other photos was one of me underneath that picture and I was saying “Mexicans can dance if you want to, you can leave Donald Trump behind.”
You would not believe the response that we had. Within an hour we had over 1000 comments, 500 for one side and 500 for the other. These people were at each other’s throats so I took it down. I just thought I don’t need that. (Both laughing, I really got the giggles)
Facebook are now censoring posts and at people are realizing what is going on so that is great.
That video The Burning Hell – how to make it big in the music industry was hilarious and I liked the song too, got a new band to look up!
We don’t know that band, someone sent the link to me and I thought it was funny so I posted it.
It was hilarious!
So I spent way too long looking at your videos you have posted, when I got down the Glee one I thought it was time to do actually write some questions! Not to mention the Safety dance video done by people on crack!
My daughter Emma wants to know, how did it feel to have Glee cover Safety Dance, in such an emotional way when he went back in a wheelchair.
I was really touched by that, that they would use that song for that kind of scene, I thought it was really cool. Not only was I happy that Glee did it, some of my fans were not as keen, but I thought it was just awesome and introduced us to a whole new generation of fans, That we wouldn’t have been able to reach so it was great. I really loved it.
How does it feel to be referenced so many times in Pop Culture? There are too many to list.
Is there one that stands out the most?
My favorite has always been the Beavis and Butthead one.
Where they are watching the video and they are saying that I can’t dance, this one has been my favorite of all time.
What was the driving force behind getting back on the road and writing a new album?
Well, just having the song reference so many times, we were still there you know. I’ve been a stay at home dad for 10 years and my son was going to the stage where he was old enough to get on alone and I was thinking about going back on the road and then all these things started happening. It just became current again. You hear 80s music referenced all over the place, the big drum sounds and the synthesizers. So it was just a whole bunch of things altogether. Everything just seemed to come together and that was it.
So your son, does he think it’s really cool that you wrote Safety Dance?
He found out a few years ago, he knew that I was a musician but he did not make the connection until about four or five years ago. The way he found out was at school. It was on the crazy frog video, so all his friends at school said “ Wow your dad is crazy frog!” he didn’t say much, for an eight-year-old but yeah that’s the way found out. He comes with me all over the place, he has been on stage with me so, he is having fun also.
Nice, is he coming out to Australia?
No, he won’t, hopefully next time. We are preparing ourselves to come back for a full tour.
When you first started out I read that you were rejected by every record label in Canada but then signed with Staik in the UK, how did it feel when Warner Brothers were forced to release your music in Canada? Did you feel like saying in-your-face?
Yeah, the record industry that is just how it is, you just have to go with the flow. We were just happy that our record was being released. When you start off in this industry is just so amazing that your record is being released, it was like our first baby, it was quite an event!
I have seen some of your merch available on your website and ebay, are you planning on a tour tee for Australia? We are pretty big on merch down here.
Yeah I will be bring some stuff down with me.
Excellent. Thanks heaps Ivan, it was great to talk to you, I look forward to seeing you in July.
