Jen catches up with Maya about her new debut single ‘Sinners’

Fresh from recording sessions in the Hollywood Hills, MAYA has today announced her debut single Sinners, a punchy, soulful reflection of the darkness and light within relationships, to be released on August 5.  MAYA will be celebrating the firey tune with a string of shows hitting Paris Cat on July 29, The Evelyn on September 2 and The Athenaeum (with Jim Steinman) on September 17.

Hi Maya, Your debut single was released last week. Can you tell us the feelings you have right now? All your hard work now for everyone to hear?

Excitement! This has been a moment I have been excited for since I first heard the song. This being my first official release, it was really insightful to understand the release process.

In your press release your state “I adore music above all things and have felt this way since I could speak. Growing up playing blues with my father and singing any chance I had… I am more than ready to share my sound and story with anyone ready to listen.” I think that there will be a lot of people listening! Can you tell us more about how your father inspired you to being an artist?

I like your positivity, thank you! My father inspired me with his own actions. Playing music to me as a baby, exposing my ears to the most influential musicians from early on, left me comparing to only the best. He taught me the strength, commitment and hard work it takes to be a musician. Yet also just showed me the healing power behind music.

Were there any other inspirations in your developing your artistic side?

I take so much inspiration from many people in my life. Yet most of my inspiration came from watching other musicians or creative people in their element. The look of passion in others just allowed me to open up and expose mine.

Is there a moment in your life that you can remember that you made the definite decision to becoming an artist? Or was it just always that you wanted to be?

Music is all I have ever know, loved and wanted to be! Since I could speak, I would sing. I have just always only wanted this life.

You recorded in the Hollywood Hills, was it a trip over there or have you been based there for a while?

It was just a trip over to the Hills. True Music, my record label, has now just settled in LA, so I am planning on moving between Aus and America quite frequently in the future.

The meaning of ‘Soulful’ is the light and dark of relationships. You voice certainly molds the listener into an introspective state. I admire artists that have this ability. The music certainly assists that as well. When singing this song, does it bring your emotions to the forefront?

Thank you! This song does bring on previous emotions, of course. Yet instead of concentrating on the first intentions of the lyrics. I am trying now to put different images behind the words. Letting go of the lost love thoughts and feelings of regret. To open up  reference to devilish thoughts, strength and bouncing back. Yet I do love the art of song writing, how it allows you to feel the same emotions you felt when writing the song, so I bask in the emotions Sinners brings each time I sing it.

The music video is so good! How long was the preparation for the shoot? I often wonder how long it takes with all the makeup and costume changes.

Thanks again, I’m so glad everyone is enjoying it! Zach Mcsweeeny and Josh Harris nailed time efficiency. We all prepared about a month prior with the concepts, props, clothes and help team. On the day everyone really did work hard together to make sure we all stayed on top of our tasks and utilised all the time we had.

Was it enjoyable to shoot and everything go smoothly? Any funny or annoying things happen while shooting?

Yes it really was! I had such a great time performing and understanding the whole video clip process. This made the day run quite smoothly. Only annoying I could think of was how freezing it was on the floor in the warehouse at night time! I’m such a sun baby that I really has to pull all my warm thinking together and not let it show in my face. Yet all a part of the journey so I enjoyed every minute.

You have 3 shows coming up in Melbourne, lucky us! Any plans to tour around Australia?

I do, which is very exciting! Shows are my favourite part and I would adore to do an Australia tour! All in time.

Congratulations on the release of Sinners, I wish you well and if I can I will make it to one of the Melbourne show.

Thanks for the questions and I hope to see you at a show soon 🙂

Sinners is a steamy track, full of fierce expression that is articulated perfectly by MAYA’s mature vocal.  The band warmly perculates underneath her soulful melody, and strings stab and sweep expressively throughout.  Written alongside powerhouse team Smash Bros (Cheryl Cole, Cee Lo green, Flo Rida) and Aussie singer/songwriter Shelley Segal (Carl Cox, Adam Levy, Josh Abrahams), Sinners is a thrilling taste of what’s to come from the diverse artist.  Excited about the release, MAYA says, I have been working hard to reach this moment and am ready to release Sinners to the world.  The single is a representation of relationship drama, it looks at the two sides of love and desire.”

Directed and produced by Zachary McSweeny (Deja, Maribelle, All The Colours), the accompanying video for Sinners is dark, artistic and seductive.  As the song focuses on two sides of one person, the video portrays MAYA as both; devilish and angelic in an abstract, smoky world.  As MAYA describes, “The music video for Sinners is a thematic display of brooding fierceness, sexual chaos and liberation…I sat with Zach and we decided we wanted to make this video tastefully artistic and experimental.  All of the shots were conceptualized to gain insight in to the way I have felt when experiencing hypocrisy in relationships.”

MAYA’s brand of soulful pop is a welcome offering into the Australian music world.  The charismatic woman behind the name, Maya Weiss has been working in the music industry for years, enthusing,  I adore music above all things and have felt this way since I could speak.  Growing up playing blues with my father and singing any chance I had… I am more than ready to share my sound and story with anyone ready to listen.”
