As fortuitous as meetings go, Tobias and Karin met at the 2017 Tamworth Country Music Festival, where they were not only sharing a stage, but also discovered they were both holding a Top 5 position on the AMRAP charts for their latest singles. “I met Tobias at The Tamworth Country Music Festival in January. I first discovered his music when we were both sitting in the Top 5 of the AMRAP charts. I instantly loved his style and thought our music would work well together on the road”, says Karin.
Tobias and Karin Page will be kicking off their tour in Karin’s adopted home state of NSW on 28th April and will be making their way through a host of venues including small halls and house concerts, ending the tour in Tobias’ home state of QLD. “One thing I love about performing music in Australia is connecting with the communities I travel to. I think both my music and Karin’s will really resonate with audiences we will be performing for. It’s also really exciting to team up with a like-minded artist such as Karin Page for these tour dates I believe the stronger the music community is around you, the better the experience is, benefitting the connection to audiences and performance as a whole”, says Tobias.
Both Tobias and Karin have enjoyed much success having various singles receiving national airplay on Australian radio, along with performing at festivals throughout Australia, and sharing the stage with some of the country’s biggest names.
ABOUT TOBiAS:Tobias took the long way around to get to the place he always needed to be, but all the experiences along the way have been invaluable. He studied history and anthropology at LaTrobe University in Melbourne, immersed himself in traditional music on the west coast of Ireland, playing in bands trying his hand at everything from grunge to ska, and saw at first-hand the dedication it took to be a professional musician while touring with some of Australia’s greatest songwriters. Tobias’ return to where he grew up on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland opened a deep creative well and helped him realise he was finally doing exactly what he should be doing, writing songs and sharing them with the world.
Releasing his latest album in November 2016, ‘Alive’ follows on from Tobias’ 2015 debut album ‘Toby Robinson’, where he explored some of his passion for folk music and Australian history. ‘Alive’ is more personal – “Alive sums it up in a word, alive as a songwriter, alive to these experiences, feeling the grief and then finally feeling that things are going to work out. It can take courage to get up there and share so much of yourself in your stories and your songs but it’s what I should be doing.”
Tobias recently released his latest up tempo single ‘When The Sun Comes Up Again’, which went straight to No.1 on the Amrap Charts, and remained in the Top 10 for 4 weeks. This followed on from the release of his single ‘Just a Boy’, about his memories of growing up on the Sunshine Coast after losing his mother at the tender age of 14.
Tobias has received national airplay on stations including ABC Local Radio Network (60+ stations), PBS FM, SYN FM, ABC Coast FM and JJJ amongst others. Tobias has toured and appeared in many festivals across Australia, co-writing and sharing the stage alongside artists such as Jen Cloher, Missy Higgins, Jordie Lane, Neko Case, Archie Roach, Mark Seymour, Eddie Reader and Toni Childs, just to name a few.
ABOUT KARIN PAGE:
After 18 months of touring Australia in a caravan with her music/life partner Adam Nyeholt, playing music wherever the road took them, singer-songwriter Karin Page finally arrived at her new home of Byron Bay in 2016. By then, her charming blend of rootsy Americana had already begun making waves around Australia – emanating from her hometown of Perth – earning Karin a slew of awards and loyal fans in every town she visited.
Karin’s nomadic lifestyle has deeply affected her music, which now bears all the character of the endless Australian road. Needless to say, this has made Karin very popular with country, blues and roots fans. Karin took out Female Artist Of The Year and Songwriter Of The Year at the 2017 WA Country Music Awards; she was nominated for a WAM Song Of The Year Award in the Blues And Roots category; she has been nominated for New Artist Of The Year at the 2017 CMC Awards; and she was crowned the 2016 Toyota Star Maker. It seems the harder Karin works, the more her accomplishments are met with recognition.
Not surprisingly, Karin’s successes are all due to her music. From the stage, the captivating beauty of her songs shines brightest. The authenticity and intelligence of her lyrics and melodies lends itself to any number of arrangements. She has performed her songs with full bands, acoustic ensembles, in duets and by herself – on festival stages, in outback pubs, city bars and many of Australian music’s best loved venues. Although still in the first decade of her career, she has become a world class live performer, with the road miles of a veteran.
Upbeat and irresistibly catchy, Karin’s latest single Still Got You is a perfect slice of folk pop, dressed up in her favourite embellishments of rootsy grooves and a dusty twang. Taken from her 2017 EP of the same name, Still Got You shows why Karin appeals to such a broad range of music lovers – seamlessly weaving several styles together – and is the perfect introduction for new fans.
The centrepiece of Still Got You (and indeed each of her songs) is Karin’s voice – beautifully rich and powerful, yet gentle and delicate when it needs to be. The sheer amount of touring under her belt shows in the ease with which she delivers her bittersweet melodies – gliding from one note to the other with effortless vigour.
From the early days of her career, fronting folk pop ensembles Spoonful Of Sugar and China Doll, to becoming one of the most talked-about new voices in Australia, Karin Page has beaten her own path. Her drive, ambition and musical talent have won the hearts of fans and critics far and wide, and she seems destined to fulfil her abundant potential. Refreshing and honest, Karin’s music can be intimate and emotional, but at the end of the day still a hell of a lot of fun to get up and dance to… and that is the power of a truly gifted songwriter.
