LIPSTEREO GIVES YOU ‘LITTLE SPACESHIPS’
‘Little Spaceships’ is the second track from LIPSTEREO’s forthcoming EP, ‘Modern Mythology’. Renowned Australian record producer, Mark Opitz (INXS, AC/DC, The Angels), produced this melodic antidote to their garage rock debut, ’Stop.’ The ’Stop’ music video recently aired in its entirety four weeks in a row on Australia’s national ABC TV music program, Rage. ’Stop’ has also gained traction internationally with significant college radio airplay in the US and Canada.
‘Little Spaceships’ is uplifting indie rock with guitars, bass and drums channelling The Beatles, Nirvana and The Ramones. Interesting arrangements and studio sounds such as bells and a 1960s electro-mechanical musical instrument, the Mellotron (used in ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ by The Beatles), fuse Opitz’s “sophisto-punk” musical vision to the band’s post punk revival sound.
This song hints at the future musical direction of LIPSTEREO as it leads the listener into areas of some great song writing. ‘Little Spaceships’ sees the band proudly wearing on their sleeve the influences of their contemporaries and heroes such as Arctic Monkeys, Weezer and The Strokes.
“Little spaceships flying over the station
Little spaceships flying o’er
Where you flying to?
I’m a flyer too”
The song is about “friends moving on and feeling left behind” says lead singer/guitarist, Sam Stranges. The song travels through some great pop rock terrain with a vocal treatment akin to Marc Bolan and T-Rex thanks to the skills of producer Mark Opitz and Thirty Mill Studios sound engineer, Colin Wynne. At about 1:55 into the song, the music takes a dramatic pause, then follows a melodic path where a Paul McCartney-esque bass line a la ‘Come Together’, can be heard whilst the Mellotron is grinding in the background.
This is the point where Stranges soars vocally above a melodic musical bed of ear candy. The song resolves utilising an almost ’Smells Like Teen Spirit’ vocal technique, affectionately known in the industry as ’screaming.’ It is truly thrilling to hear this kind of rock ’n’ roll being made today… in Melbourne!
The music video was recently filmed during a live sold-out show in Melbourne at The Catfish (Fitzroy). The video shows the band in fine form and as an exciting, bona fide live act. Since COVID restrictions have eased, every headline show that LIPSTEREO has performed has sold out in advance. The audience’s reactions to their mesmerising live performances have been electric. Do not miss the rise and rise of LIPSTEREO!
LIPSTEREO’S next headline gig is @ Bad Decisions Bar 46 Johnston Street Fitzroy Friday 26th August.
