After being around since 1997, you’d think bands would be hyper concentrated on what’s next. There’s no denying Nonpoint is rolling with the changes but staying true to their fans. Literally coming in HOT off Shiprocked 2023, their newest offering “The Emerald City Tour” based on the classic “The Wizard of Oz” is definitely an experience worth indulgence. From Elias’ perspective “The story is so relatable it checks all the boxes.” Not only does their single “Heartless” have lyrics based on this multi-generational hit, the show uses the familiar imagery.

It also offers fans a one of a kind opportunity from the inside of their tour bus to listen to previously unreleased material and offer their critique, and even choose songs they should work on. “It’s been a pretty positive experience for the band. There have been a couple of times at the end of a song the people just… applaud. It’s been really neat seeing the reactions, especially in the different cities. How they react to the songs. We are taking a lot of reaction research. Demographic has a lot to do with it (older vs younger fans) then asking them both about what they think of the different songs on a record together and their response ‘well that’s what we expect from you guys. That you have that variety in your record.’ It’s inspiring to know they are catching all those small underlying innuendos.

All of this while managing to play to huge crowds. How’s the tour going? “I have to say I’m not surprised but I’m elated at the fact that there hasn’t been a down show that we’ve done so far” Elias said though their stop in Jacksonville, Florida had fewer numbers than the South Florida dates, the sound from the crowd has been “getting increasingly louder each stop “. I can say Jacksonville natives don’t have inside voices. “Yeah, there were no inside voices there!” We are loud all the time but the love of Nonpoint everywhere they go plays a crucial part in the increase in volume. I asked how the response to the release of Heartless has been and he said “The band’s happy, the team’s happy. People are singing the hell out of it”. When asking what the motivation for revisiting such a familiar subject, Elias said “well, it’s an endearing classic. It’s just timeless. The underlying story of each of those individual characters we all need it today. It started out as a really nice idea that we peppered throughout our career. It’s tap your heels and it’s the kind of thing that breaks the chaos.”

I always try to get artists to share a little bit about what happens when they aren’t riding in a bus trying to keep track of which day it is and where they are headed. What is the major reset button? Elias talked mainly of time with his family being his most important destressing activity. “Nature and tripping around with my family. When I get away and get to spend that time I don’t normally get to spend with them. Long extended periods of time where I don’t have to get on my phone or anything. Those times are really what resets me. ” A lot of people don’t realize that especially for artists who have been around for a few years, family is their biggest focus. That stabilizer in an otherwise crazy world.

I asked, as I always do, if there are any secret plans for upcoming tours. He wouldn’t tell me anything but that a big summer tour was about to be announced shortly I tried, very hard, to get him to give it away, but to Elias’s credit he wouldn’t do it. Considering how large this band’s presence is, it will be a can’t be missed show if Elias is saying it’s big.
