The Smashing Pumpkins, Interpol and Rival Sons Crush iThink Amphitheater

From the look of things, the thirtieth anniversary of Smashing Pumpkins is going pretty good.

It’s been an exhausting few weeks of outdoor shows, mostly due to rain delays, but finally the Amp was blessed with a surprisingly decent few hours.  This allowed the crowd to get in early and in full force for opener Rival Sons

If you haven’t seen this band, you’re missing out.  With their distinct blend of personalities and somewhat nasty blues sound, they are one of those artists that I can’t quite understand how they haven’t had a huge breakout year.

They’ve been around  awhile.  They have the experience and the chops to back it up. They are one of those artists that always seem to be the bridesmaid and never the bride.  Here’s my feeble attempt to really get them noticed. So what’s going on?  Surely somehow, some way they can land those covered headliner gigs.  Even if you aren’t a fan of Interpol or The Smashing Pumpkins, Rival Sons is worth the effort to come out to the show.

Interpol, a New York based band, has a really good vibe.   From the crowd reaction , they have a pretty.good following as well.  Listed as a post punk revival band, the description is pretty accurate.

Lighting was definitely not photo friendly, but suited the groove of the music. It’s one of the few times I’d wished to have front of house as I feel the full view of the lighting would have been preferable The crowd seemed to really like them. I like all kinds of variety in my music, and I could see adding them to my playlist.

The Smashing Pumpkins had one of.the best lighting shows I’ve seen this year.

The Smashing Pumpkins came out to a crowd completely on their feet. A full compliment of the band. I always love when there is a palpable energy from the crowd. From the front of house, the lighting was beautiful.

Unfortunately, trying to get individual photos of band members with the amount of fog machine use and low register lighting definitely made me up my game. I have decided the entire band is camera shy.

At first, I thought Billy Corgan sounded somewhat off, but as I walked away from my photo location, the mix sounded much better. Could have been as simple as out glorious Florida weather and its mixed bag of allergens. All in all it was a great show with fans celebrating.
