A Very Proud Richard Patrick Of Filter Chats At Rocklahoma
Richard Patrick Discusses the new album, “The Algorithm”, the death of the record industry, and the state of live music.

When one of my assistants, Carrie, decided to go for it and take charge at Rocklahoma, she had no idea she was being thrust into interviewing one of the nineties most iconic voices about his band’s new record but boy was she ever. There are certain artists I just cheer on to more and more success because the provided a soundtrack of my life. Honestly, I’m a bit sad because I had to step back and skip this year’s Rocklahoma and missed the opportunity to really pick Richard’s brain about the past, present and future, but he was in good hands. As I’m transcribing this I’m so happy just listening to the sheer excitement, and frankly, terror trying to keep her composure. Richard Patrick is one of the nicest, most patient people. She even admits to him at one point she was just star struck.

As I recently said in my review of the live show, he still has the pipes. He is “super proud” of “The Algorithm”. “It’s a return to form. Probably the best since ‘The Amalgamut’. It sounds like Filter but etched into today’s form. I’ve worked with a lot of different people on it. I’m really proud of it. Check it out Immediately.”
I’ve had the opportunity to give it a listen. He isn’t wrong. If you caught the set at Rocklahoma, the first four songs are from the new record. That is a very telling of how great this album really is. He also took advantage of the lock downs to work on, not only this album but movie scores. “I (also) spent a lot of time with my computer and I learned a lot of music software, and bought a lot of sounds and instruments for my computer.”
His personal playlist contains Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper and Ministry. If you didn’t know they are all currently in the Freaks On Parade Tour together. “Because you’re reminded how awesome they are while you’re on tour with them. I listen to a lot of Deftones, who I love. Who else do I love? Pantera. This morning, I just found this band ‘BRKN Love’. They sound amazing. I was on stage. Right on the stage left. Pantera sounds amazing too.” The discussion turned to the state of the music industry.

“For fifteen years there was this pirating going on. That destroyed the music industry. Touring is keeping it alive. I still believe in making records and putting new music out there. You know, it sucks the record industry is dead. I understand the importance of having hits, I mean we’ve had hits, but radio is so weird now.” When asked if some of the industry changes have allowed independents to get their music out without being beholden to a label, Richard said that his label “Golden Robot just let me turn the record in and didn’t really tell him how to do it.” That is certainly a plus in the industry and a testament to his place as an established and admired artist.
