Silent Skies Has An Abundance of Creativity And Musical Experience
Responsible for one of the best, relaxing, beautifully orchestrated albums I’ve heard in quite some time, Vikram Shankar from Silent Skies sits down to talk new music and his process.

There has been so much going on lately, that I haven’t been reviewing many works. I’m so glad I took the time to give the album “Dormant” from silent skies a relaxing listen. From just a few minutes into listening, it had the perfect effect. I needed relaxation, and stress relief and it definitely fit the bill. I referred to it ( positively) as hot tub and wine music. A wonderful blend of romance and relaxation, I had to speak to the person responsible .
Vikram Shankar is one of those human beings you really have to work hard to talk to. It’s not that he isn’t friendly, he most certainly is, he’s just one of those creative geniuses that seems a bit guarded in his answers. We all know quite a few people like him, especially if you know musical artists. Living inside your head and your inspiration is exhausting some times. I love to sit back and just listen when ad artist opens up and talks candidly. We got there quicker than I anticipated with the wonderful, but sedate man.
“You can listen to the music on multiple levels, or you can just dive into the lyrics and discover how challenging the writing really is. It essentially is just a series of questions diving inward to discover who you are. They tend to write with philosophical and existential themes. Addressing this I asked if he could tell me if there was an education background on these topics or what lead them to this.
“I think for both of us, it’s just a natural progression. We write and believe in what we call ‘radical honesty’. It means if you want to write it, you write it and sometimes that can be politically uncomfortable. I’m speaking lyrically. Musically we like to throw something to an audience they may not expect. It throws them for a loop. That’s also a big part of being who we are. We both have backgrounds that put us in the forefront of our minds on those subjects. Mental health is so important and navigating life is very, very difficult for all of us. Maybe more for some than others. “
“Tom worked in Cancer therapy for quite a few years. He essentially worked in Hospice care. Caring for patients in their final hour, so to speak. That really give you a perspective on mortality. What life is really all about.’
“I guess you could view my writing as a form of therapy. My writing is very much like holding up a mirror and being honest about what you see in that reflection. Sometimes what you see is very distressing and you don’t like what you see. Our music is very much like personal journaling. I asked is their sonic universe is expanding to different sounds, but he doesn’t like to plan these things. He does like to experiment with sounds and compositions. Hip hop elements, and guitars which they have never used before but it worked out beautifully. He refers to “bringing the instruments desires to life”. When I was younger this was what drove me to play many differet kinds of instruments. As I got older making keyboard related music. I love playing different pianos because I believe they all have different personalities to them.”
I loved this. We assign life to many things in our life, but to truly appreciate music, you have to see it, and the instruments as living things. Sometimes the effect us in the same way energy from another human being can.
A serious pianist but a multi instrument artist, Shankar writes strikingly full orchestrated set of pieces, that really feel joyful and live. He played the French horn for quite some time. He plays soprano and alto recorders, mandolin and a plethora of other instruments on this album. You can find the track listing and order here. I highly recommend it.
