Jake From Of Limbo Talks To Metallicougar

New Single & Video “California Demon”, and his interesting wall art.

Getting the camera aimed took a few minutes. So, I was getting a really great view of their music room’s decor. Including the steer horns aptly lit in red seemed strangely appropriate given the latest single “California Demon”, about deals made to make it in Hollywood. A concept that isn’t as foreign or far fetched as it used to be. More figurative than literal, but deals none the less.

The music industry has become increasingly difficult for anyone trying to get ahead. If a musician isn’t playing in multiple bands, and they aren’t hitting the jackpot on streams, it’s inevitable they have some sort of means to get by and keep the lights on until those breaks start happening. Originally it was supposed to be both Jake and younger brother, Luke scheduled. I was surprised when I was able to see it was only Jake. There’s a long pause as he adjusts the camera and gets is his perfect spot to keep the interview going. Apparently, Jake had a bit of a struggle with the camera. It took us a couple minutes to get in the swing of the interview. We chatted about life, technology and Post Malone. Post , in silhouette, happens to be my Zoom background at the present time. Born in Alaska, Raised in Australia from age seven to twenty three, he holds dual citizeship, but not the accent.

We talked about the quote as they were touring with Kevin Martin (Candlebox) who called them “the last dangerous rock band you fuckers will ever see”. Quite a compliment. Luke is a bit “sad he’s hangin up his spurs”, but said “he’s on top of his game’.

Moving on to talk about “California Demon” : “We are playing up that old Faustian bargain cliche up but to the enth degree. Splashing it a little bit more with that ole ‘Satanic Panic’.”

He hinted that they may be touring really soon with ” a band that was pretty big in their heyday in the late 80’s and early 90’s. I don’t really want to put it that way because they’ve been active this whole time, but that’s what they are most known for. ” I followed up on Luke being missing. “Yeah, he’s working at the bar. His onbe buddy just had a baby and his other was out doing doctor baby things. Luke is just slinging them drinks at like eleven AM. Breakfast of champions I guess.”

When they write, it’s typically a combination of old schhol and tech. “When we get to lytics stage it’s usually both of us with what have wrttine previously in fron t of us to read, and our phones . We go back and forth usually about three or four hours to get a final lyric sheet done. In regards to writing there isn’t much of disagreement, but Jake says some of his favorite lines are those Luke has written. His favorite being “you’ve got the feathers and I’ve got the tar”. What we really disagree on the most is the riffs. It has to got through the demo, the recordig equipents and then we have to play it back to listen to it.”

I asked him to tell me a bit more about his unique wall art. It’s especially out of place since he is in Long Beach, California. “That’s an actual steer skull. We have a friend who picks those up cheap in Mexico when he’s surfing. He brings them back and basically sells them to pay for his Mexico trip. We got one from him and we just stuffed some lights up there. He’s our studio cow ”
