It seems only fitting with the moniker of The Metallicougar, I would be interviewing a band named CARSEX.
With their new release of ” ‘Crooked Canvass’ ” CARSEX is making their mark. It definitely took me back to a time when new wave and punk ruled the music scene. To be completely honest, I’m never married to listening to any particular genre. Most people would never know I even listened to new age punk and new wave. One of the reasons I write for “Music Injection” is the ability to review, and talk to bands from different backgrounds, influences and writing styles.
Jeremy Schott was fun to chat with. We are on the same page in many ways. Both of us are creative for the love of the creativity. Admittedly his “goal is to make music we love”. He owns an art gallery and a horror themed pizza place in the band’s home of Long Beach, California. It affords him the time to do that, while living in Durango, Colorado.
The band has many influences for Jeremy “country, hip-hop, metal, for other band members blues rock, Max is into Queens Of The Stone Age, also Dillinger Escape Plan. Nigel’s (Burke) cousin is from Off and Circle Jerks.” There’s a lot going on there. I asked if that becomes a little tense when they are writing and recording. “(There’s) a lot of arguing. I’ve never been where it’s more difficult, but it all comes together.” They start with a few rhythms and then Nigel with mumble into the mic. I’ll say (it) ‘sounds like you said this’. We use journals as well.”
Their “aim is to let it go naturally. Why don’t we do that this way instead of that.” So, their flow is more creative and less structured. “(I’m) never happy. You’re just done.” I wondered if he ever hears the finished product and wishes he could go back and change anything. “That’s part of what being live is about. ” Making chances as you go. They record all digital but believe in recording all parts live as a band. “There are no click tracks. Sometimes you listen (to other bands) and they sound like robots.”
With all the thing Jeremy has going on, I asked if he had anything he wished he could do. “I wish I could play guitar better. I’m crushing, as Nigel calls it, the shoe string base. It holds everything together, but not the guitar.
They are working on an EP release . “It’s a passion project. ” Learn more at WWW.CARSEXLBC.COM

About CARSEX:
Forged by the survivors of Long Beach music scene bands Damned Age, Black Velvet Brigade, and Red River Massacre, the five music veterans in CARSEX have slugged it out in the clubs of Orange County, California for more than 10 years. While performing shows in these various groups on the circuit they became friends over time. As the bands they were in either dissolved or changed direction – they decided to form under a new banner with shared musical tastes & goals, and CARSEX formed in 2018. Their sound is a mix of Circle Jerks/Black Flag/The Germs, with Danzig, Fu Manchu & a bit Queens of the Stone Age blended into a potent combination. They play hard and loud with no hint of an apology.
CARSEX has previously released 2 EPs: 2019’s CarSex and 2020’s 2020 EP, which featured the singles “Your Generation” and “Lovesick”. A new EP is being finalized and will be released later this summer.
CARSEX is very much a live band, and shows are currently being booked to support the release of “Crooked Canvas” and the upcoming EP. They’ve opened for Stillwell (Fieldy from Korn’s Band), The Obsessed, Mondo Generator, Suicide Silence, Unsane, Dead Poet’s Society, Narcoleptic Youth, and O’Zorn!, among others.
