This March sees The Wonky Donkey in Forrest, Victoria play host to mini-festival, ‘Weekend at the Wonk,’ headlined by The Smith Street Band and Jeff Rosenstock with a whole stack of friends. The small capacity country pub will also be treated to performances by The Hard Aches, Antarctigo Vespucci, The Sugarcanes, Camp Cope & newcomers Worm.
The town of Forrest in the Otway Ranges, South West of Melbourne is a pretty quiet place. That was until The Smith Street Band and Jeff Rosenstock showed up nearly two years ago to record an album together. The cacophonous months that followed were met with nothing but enthusiasm, excitement and a healthy dose of curiosity by the forest dwelling locals of this picture perfect town.
But the jewel in the crown of Forrest is the one and only Wonky Donkey hotel. Equal parts locals holding up the bar, excited mountain bikers renting out the nearby Wonky Stables and for that period of time a nightly visit from some bedraggled city slickers, The ‘Wonk’ quickly established itself as the must see attraction for anyone passing through. The highlight of this time was an acoustic show with Jeff, Wil Wagner and Georgia Maq all playing in front of the pool tables in the front bar followed by a few beers around a bonfire at ‘Walshy’s’ – a moment that would become the front cover for The Smith Street Band’s Forrest recordings, now more commonly known as ‘Throw Me In The River.’
With the news that Jeff Rosenstock will be returning to our shores for an Australian tour in March, tongues wagged all up and down the surf coast as to whether this New York prince would return to his rightful place amongst the parrots of the Otways. Poison City Records, Jackknife Music and I Love Life are over the moon to present to you ‘Weekend at the Wonk.’ A night of camping and music amongst friends in one of the most beautiful places on earth!
