Sydonia talks new album, day jobs, tour stories and more in new interview!
In a world where bands are aiming to please and to give people an “expected” style of music, Sydonia want to get sand in people’s eyes. They want you to DO SOMETHING. Whatever it is you feel strongly about, get up and fight for it or against it. The song is about suffering in the world and the apathy that people have towards curing it.
SO DO SOMETHING.
They 4-piece gave their first taste of album #3 a few weeks ago, with the single becoming available on July 29 in time for the tour to start. It’s heavier, faster and all the passion, the anger and the angst is self-produced into the track.
It was a great pleasure to catch up with Sydonia and find out how they’re feeling about the new album and their new sound. Read below!
Interview by Freda Lewko
Hello from Music Injection! Hope you’re all doing well. How are things going in the Sydonia camp now that your single “Eyes of Sand” is out?
Hi Music Injection!!! Things are going extremely well, we are all very busy in the Sydonia camp.
It’s a no-brainer to say that “Eyes of Sand” is definitely more aggressive than your previous material. Are people liking the direction you’re taking with this new album?
Yes it is more aggressive. The stuff Dana is writing now is a lot meatier than before so it compliments my writing style perfectly. Eyes of Sand has been really well received by our fans and music media in general. To be honest we are surprised how much love it’s getting…we are not complaining though!
Will the upcoming LP still have similar elements from your other albums? What’s the motivation behind the path you’re taking with the new album?
Even though the new stuff we are writing is more aggressive we are still Sydonia! There will ALWAYS be a progressive/melodic side to any release we put out there. That is a signature part of our sound.
Can you tell us anything about the lyrical content of the album? Does it have a new direction as well?
Dana is our master songwriter. We all write the music but Dana writes all of the words. They are also his vocal melodies. The cool thing for me with this album is that I have my own verses to write and sing. We have made a conscious decision to utilize my heavy vocals more giving our new tracks more vocal punch.
You’ve been around in the scene for quite a while (Sydonia being formed in 1997) – back then how did you imagine things would be today, almost two decades down the line?
What you vision and what comes to reality are always different. While we have received critical acclaim and been honoured at being asked to tour with our some of the bands that I love, we all still have to work full time day jobs to keep our lives, alive! I’m writing to you now from my work computer. People have the wrong impression that we are ‘made’ musicians. When you get a big support it costs the band money!!! You never get paid well as a support even on big tours.
In 2009 you released a DVD “Through a Lens Is All We Are” featuring footage from tours. Will you be documenting any of your upcoming shows for another DVD? Perhaps including the making of the new album?
That is a definite possibility….
Can you share any crazy touring stories with us? Every band has at least a few!
Brother! There are too many to mention….BBQ at a St Kilda park with the Lamb of God boys….Willie pulls out a beer bong and a bottle of fucken tequila or vodka, which one I can’t remember now…. You guys can speculate at how we all ended up!
My other personal fav is not a crazy story or piss up. When we toured USA with StoneSour we stayed at Corey’s (Taylor) house in Iowa and with Jim’s (Root) in Florida. This was for me the highlight of anything we have ever done. To have the guys you most look up to invite you into their homes and be awesome…still makes me go a little goosie…haha
Is there anything you’d like to tell our readers to get them pumped for your new album?
Sydonia is a brutal force; the addition of Ant on lead has given us an element we desperately needed.
Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions! Definitely looking forward to the album. Enjoy the upcoming tour!
Thank you for all the years our fans have stuck with us. Hopefully the industry sees what you guys and people like Jim and Randy have always seen in us!
Cheers mate!
