Mike Kruger of Charming Liars Talks New Album, Tour, and The World Cup With The Metallicougar

LA based Alternative band Charming Liars has a lot to be cheering about, but mostly, Mike Kruger is cheering about England’s presence in the World Cup. More than once our conversation was interrupted with him quietly but enthusiastically cheering. He said “each year the English have high hopes for their futbol team feeling it will be one of the best years. Then it’s a national disappointment and the whole country mourns.”

Mike, a native of England, loves LA for its population of “people from everywhere else”. He calls it a “great place to be a stranger”. After nearly a year of planning, Charming Liars are about to head out on a four-month US. tour. They have three more videos and a full length album still pending release – they have been very busy. While admittedly he says a full length album in the current state of the music industry might be “not wise by decision” he and his band mates “wanted one piece to tell the full story”. Plus, it gives them the opportunity to release a vinyl collector’s version as well. For him this comes across passionately with him adding he ” would love to have been a teenager around 1977″. Currently, their song Like a Drug is getting a great deal of attention. For the band, the message couldn’t be more timely. It is part of a trilogy of videos telling a story of drug addiction and will be released as a short film entitled “Spoon” to be shown at the Sundance Film Festival, and other festivals should the director and producer wish to do so.

When it comes to touring Mike says hearing his song sung back to him is ” super weird and everything he fantasized about as an artist”. He “loves the big cities but enjoys the smaller markets and the opportunity to have conversations with fans”. He also added perspective to how perceptions can be very different from reality when it comes to culture. He says that people overseas learn a great deal about American culture from “looking at the US for pop culture and trends”, but the reality is people from all parts of the country are the nicest, politest people”. Their tour will take them through Middle America, so be on the lookout and come by for great music and conversation.
