As A Rival. A mixture of rock riffs and punk sensibilities. Catchy hooks and melodic anthems. Fast becoming one of the most hard-hitting, hard-working, explosive live bands on the Australian punk rock scene, the band continue to deliver upon their unrelenting live shows, clearing the bar they continue to raise with ease. Now they drop their filmclip for the single OBSOLETE – which features guest vocals from Bodyjar legend Tom Read, as well as an extensive Australian tour, taking in NSW, VIC, SA and TAS!

Comprising of Pete Cerni (vox/guitar), Kylie Groth (bass), Nathan Wheatley (drums) and new addition Michael Conti (guitar), the Melbourne 4-piece will release their latest video clip for new single, “Obsolete” mid July. A punk infused anthem; fighting the reality of aging and fear of irrelevance that comes with it. With special guest vocals by Tom Read (Bodyjar), this release will be backed by a second string of east coast shows with the Obsolete Spring ‘16 tour.

as-a-rival-02.jpgThe past 6 months has seen a turning point with the release of their debut album, By Design. Recorded and co-produced by Read and mixed by Grammy Award winning producer Adam Kasper (Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age), the album sees a maturity in songwriting, surpassing the promise and expectations built from previous releases. Supported by a successful 12 date east coast tour culminating in the packed out homecoming show at Cherry Bar, followed by their first major support slot at 170 Russell, 2016 has seen a growth that has helped the band reach into unknown territory and grab it by the throat.

From Cerni’s opening growl, ‘Can’t stand and watch you throw it all away’, the tone is set for the coming assault. With the driving beat of Time Flies A Fear, the intensity of Fire!Fire!Fire!, and groove of Arrow to the Knee, this twelve song opus is packed with energy and drive.

By Design boasts a myriad of guests including Grant Relf & Shane Wakker (Bodyjar), Rich Hall (Laser Brains) and Charlie Zulu (Darn Matter).

Beginning from an accumulation of bedroom demos, the premise for As A Rival was to challenge themselves musically and become a rival to what was on offer. The year 2011 saw the release of the Reminder Designer EP, which was followed by the acclaimed Concerning Trends EP in 2013. Playing live is where the band feels most at home, touring along the east coast of Australia, both metro and regional since their inception, stamping a claim as one of Australia’s most entertaining live bands.

The As A Rival juggernaut will roll out bigger and better than ever with their Obsolete Spring ‘16 tour across the east coast of Australia.
