Jen chats to Shane Nicholson about his new album ‘Love and Blood’ and the Broadbeach Country Music Festival.

Shane performs at the Broadbeach Country Music Festival tonight! Jen catches up with Shane to chat about his new album and of course the festival.

On your Facebook I saw you post about Melbourne’s cold weather. “Frigid artic wind” you said. That was a few weeks ago but now it is even colder. I live in the hills near Melb and as I type I don’t think I have ever been this cold!

I bet you are glad that the Broadbeach Country Music Festival is in Brisbane with much warmer weather. Very jealous.

This festival has become so big that the dates needed to be changed for this year.

How much you are looking forward to playing there?

I’m super excited. I’ve never played the festival before, but many of my friends have, and I’ve always heard how great it is. Plus I have my band, The General Waste, coming with me, which is always a treat.

Are these type of festivals like a catch up with your music mates and a chance to meet new artists? After your hard work of course!

Most definitely! They are sorta like an alumni meeting of the country music fraternity, and also a chance to discover some new acts coming up through the ranks.

At Broadbeach festival you are releasing your new album ‘Love and Blood’ which is great timing, was this planned for a long time or more recently?

That was the plan from an early stage. I always like releasing mid-year, so we decided to coincide it with the festival. It seemed like a great way to celebrate, and launch, the new album.

Will you be playing a few new songs off the album? I am sure you will play ‘Safe’

We will certainly play a few new songs, including the first single “Safe”. But we’ll also be doing a stampede through some of the back catalogue.

Your new single ‘Safe’ was released a couple of weeks ago. The concept is great. Everyone wants to be safe. It makes me feel lucky that I have someone that makes me feel safe. What was the inspiration behind this song?

The song was written as a Christmas gift for my girlfriend, Emma. She told me that she’d never had a song written about her, and I thought “well, every girl needs a song written about them”.

Nice! What will be your next single off the album? Or too early to say?

It’ll be announced very soon!!!

You are no newcomer to the industry and you have evolved to be more than an artist. You must be super busy you with now being an in-demand producer and a talent scout. How do you do it!

I don’t sleep as much as I’d like! But I love being busy, and I love that my life is filled with music. It’s not hard to work long hours when the work is something you enjoy.

Where do you write your songs, do you have one place? One artist told me that he writes in a treehouse….

I generally find that I need to isolate myself to write – disappear from the world for a while. I always like to find a quiet place somewhere, away from everyday life. This time around, I wrote almost all of the Love And Blood songs in a house on the Hawksebury River, which was only accessible by boat. No phone. No internet. Just quiet.

Thanks Shane. All the best for your album release!

Ahead of the release of his upcoming album ‘Love and Blood’ released Friday July 28th, triple ARIA award winning singer-songwriter Shane Nicholson today shares new video for single ‘Safe’ and announces dates to his National album tour kicking off in July.

Nicholson’s sixth solo studio album was written on the Hawkesbury River in NSW late last year. Most of the songs on Love and Blood were conceived there, sometimes in one sitting, sometimes over several visits. However long it took, the singer found the isolation of the setting a tonic for his creative juices.  One of the gems he came up with on the river is the current single ‘Safe‘.

‘Love and Blood’ album follows Shane’s 2015’s ARIA Award-winning masterpiece Hell Breaks Loose. The Central Coast-based singer has kept the winning formula from that album for Love and Blood, opting once again to work with his good mate, producer Matt Fell, at his Sydney studio Love Hz and assembling a familiar cast of musicians. Included on the album is drummer Josh Schuberth and multi-instrumentalist Glen Hannah, as well as new face horn-player supreme James Greening who adds his delicious slab of New Orleans blues with a swagger to several tracks. Lending their vocals on the album are Josh Pyke, Andrew Swift, Fanny Lumsden and Imogen Clark plus the king of Americana music, Nashville legend Buddy Miller.

Of course in a recording career spanning 17 years Nicholson has grown to be something of a master too. Since making his debut with Brisbane band Pretty Violet Stain in 2000, Nicholson’s career has gone from strength to strength, with numerous ARIAs and Golden Guitars collected along the way for albums such as Familiar Ghosts (2008), Bad Machines (2011) and Hell Breaks Loose, as well as for Rattlin’ Bones (2008) and Wreck & Ruin (2012) the two much-lauded collaborations with Kasey Chambers.

Nicholson says the title Love and Blood “seemed to sum up what the album’s about when I put all the songs together.”

Now he’s looking forward to taking these songs and the many others from his distinguished back catalogue on the road in August. The singer found renewed enthusiasm for the touring life on the back of Hell Breaks Loose, so he’s keen to do more of it with the new one.
